Apple hits Home Run with latest quarterly earnings

Apple hit major milestones today in the latest quarterly earnings:

1. Highest Quarterly Sales of $20.3 billion, rising 67% from previous year
2. Highest Quarterly Profits of $4.3 billion, rising 70% from previous year
3. Highest Unit Sales of Mac, iPhone and iPad

“We are blown away to report over $20 billion in revenue and over $4 billion in after-tax earnings—both all-time records for Apple,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPhone sales of 14.1 million were up 91 percent year-over-year, handily beating the 12.1 million phones RIM sold in their most recent quarter. We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year.”

Apple raised the outlook for the holiday quarter, and as Steve Jobs indicated, is planning to launch something exciting this year... Apple TV sold 250,000 units for the quarter.

In the conference call, Steve Jobs was elated, talked about winning, catching "tiger by the tail", and even joked about loving "Flash" ( memory). Mr. Jobs talked about creating the best products for the markets and customers Apple serves, and maintaining higher margins by providing the better Apple experience out of the box. Mr. Jobs quipped that he would like to learn from Nokia on how to create Smart phones for less than $50. Apple had a phenomenal quarter for the new iPad, and importantly, the businesses and education are finding new applications for the iPad.

“7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad,” said Jobs, adding that competing manufacturers were struggling to meet the price point of the iPad, which starts at $500. Both Samsung and RIM have not announced pricing on their tablets.

“These are among the reasons that the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA — dead on arrival,” Jobs said during the earnings call!

After hitting another record daily high, Apple stock was down more than 6% in after hours, perhaps reacting to lower gross margins and pent up expectations.

Apple Stock Explodes - On Fire - Before Earnings

Apple is all set to announce the quarterly earnings on Oct 18 after market close!

Apple hit an all-time high (again) today, closing the regular session at $314.74, a surge of $12.43 in one day, or 4.11%. Apple's market cap is now at $287.53 billion.

Apple is poised to announce quarterly revenue of at least $18.86 billion, earnings of at least $4.06 a share, and provide an uplifting outlook for the last holiday quarter, traditionally Apple's best quarter. This could mean Apple's stock has more upside going into the holiday season... An Apple analyst raised the Apple stock price estimate to $500 today.

Apple could report sales of 4.5 million iPads (not a typo), 9 million iPhones, 9 million iPods, and 4 million Macs... for a dizzying total sales of at least $18.86 billion. This is going to be a Monster quarter for Apple by all measures.

Important side note: This will mark the first quarter in Apple's storied history when it's quarterly revenue will exceed that of Microsoft's! Amazing indeed!

Apple’s Big Event: Buzz Reaches Fever Pitch

After a couple of uncharacteristic missteps and mishaps, will Apple be getting the magic back with its next big announcement?
Its last product unveiling, for the iPhone 4, proved to be anticlimactic after tech blog Gizmodo released photos of a prototype phone. Then came the infamous Antennagate press conference, in which CEO Steve Jobs moved to quiet criticism of reception on the iPhone 4 by announcing that Apple would give free cases to owners of the phone.

Associated Press
But now Apple seems to be back in the swing of things, at least as far as creating that patented Apple buzz around product announcements. The speculation about its latest event is at normal Apple levels — by which we mean that it’s completely insane.
Read more on Wall Street Journal
Bottomline:

It doesn't really matter what big announcement Apple makes tomorrow... What matters is how Apple will WOW the consumer, yet again with new innovations!! Could it be the new iPad with multi-processing (oh, how I wish I can listen to Pandora while browsing, and writing some notes), or a new iPod touch (with everything someone can ask for including videoconferencing & a larger form factor than the current iPod touch, but smaller than the iPad, including an eBook reader - watch out Amazon), or a new iTunes business model with partnerships with TV & Movie studios (Offering 99 cents TV show rentals and even 99 cents movie downloads! It's about time Apple does video right...), or a new Apple device altogether... (how about a new iRadio or something?).

Be enthralled...

Apple Earnings Blowout - It's Going To Be Huge!

Congratulations to Apple & Steve Jobs for providing a good solution yesterday to the iPhone 4 antenna problem... Every iPhone 4 user will get a free case! This is a good response from Apple, and will hopefully allow users to fully appreciate their new iPhone 4, and be very happy about their purchase!!

Did you catch the iPhone 4 Antenna song that Apple played in their news conference yesterday... very funny!

Expect Apple to deliver another blowout quarter when it announces earnings this week...

According to Yahoo Finance, the average earnings estimate by 40 analysts is for Apple to earn $3.10 a share this quarter, with a low estimate of $2.65 and a high estimate of $3.47. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple breaks free and announces earnings well over $3.47 a share...

The average revenue estimate by the same 40 analysts is for Apple to make $14.74 billion this quarter, with a low estimate of $13.82 billion and a high estimate of $15.74 billion... Again, it's very likely that Apple will report revenue on the very high end of the estimate, perhaps even surpass the $15.74 billion mark!

What's going for Apple to have a huge earnings blowout?

1. iPad - more than 3 million iPads were sold in the quarter, accounting for at least $1.5 billion in new business.
2. iPhone 4 - at least 1.5 million new iPhone 4 sales happened in June. This one is tricky though... Did the launch of iPhone 4 stall the sales of iPhone 3GS? Let's hope that it did not; total sales of iPhones for the quarter could end up above the 9 million mark...
3. MACs - Intel just announced that they had the best quarter in history on the sales of the microprocessors that power the majority of computers worldwide! Apple is becoming a leading player in contributing to the sales of Intel processors, and it's plausible that Apple had a huge quarter for MAC sales...

All eyes will be on Apple as it announces perhaps the biggest & baddest earnings quarter in Apple history!!

Apple Must Offer iPhone 4 Customers Worthy Solution for Antenna Problem

Consumer Reports, the leading authority on independent testing & recommendations, has spoken:

Lab tests: Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4

Lab test: Apple iPhone 4 design defect confirmed
It's official. Consumer Reports' engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4.
Apple & Steve Jobs : This is a wakeup call!! Either you ignore the problem, provide a temporary solution or create a real solution that befits the most innovative company and your reputation!

In the absence of a real solution offered by Apple, should customers accept the temporary duct tape solution offered by Consumer Reports:
We did, however, find an affordable solution for suffering iPhone 4 users: Cover the antenna gap with a piece of duct tape or another thick, non-conductive material. It may not be pretty, but it works. We also expect that using a case would remedy the problem. We'll test a few cases this week and report back.

Come on Apple! It's about time you offer a meaningful solution that customers would appreciate... and have come to know Apple for! Apple iPhone 4 has amazing design innovations, and is possibly the best smartphone in the marketplace today... Why not cement your position for good, and offer something that customers will respect Apple for?

Apple Must Offer iPhone 4 Customers A Worthy Solution for Antenna Problem! NOW!!

Letter from Apple Regarding iPhone 4

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Apple iPhone 4 - New Design Innovations

When creating iPhone 4, Apple designers and engineers didn’t start with a clean sheet of paper. They started with three years of experience designing and building the phones that redefined what a phone can do. iPhone 4 is the result of everything they’ve learned so far.

And it’s all contained in a beautiful enclosure a mere 9.3 millimeters thin, making iPhone 4 the world’s thinnest smartphone."

Engineered Glass
"All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass — the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It’s also recyclable."

Retina Display
"The 960-by-640 backlit LCD display boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution phone screen ever. To achieve this, Apple engineers developed pixels so small — a mere 78 micrometers across — that the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels. That makes text remarkably sharp and graphics incredibly vivid. IPS technology also provides excellent color and contrast from almost any viewing angle."

Stainless Steel Band

"Created from our own alloy, then forged to be five times stronger than standard steel, the CNC-machined band is the mounting point for all the components of iPhone 4. The band provides impressive structural rigidity and allows for its incredibly thin, refined design. It also functions as both iPhone 4 antennas."

Apple A4 Processor

"Apple engineers designed the A4 chip to be a remarkably powerful yet remarkably power-efficient mobile processor. With it, iPhone 4 can easily perform complex jobs such as multitasking, editing video, and placing FaceTime calls. All while maximizing battery life."

Advanced Gyro + Accelerometer

"iPhone 4 includes a built-in three-axis gyroscope. When paired with the accelerometer, it makes iPhone 4 capable of advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, full 3D attitude, and rotation rate. Translation: More motion gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience."

Innovative Camera and LED

"The iPhone 4 camera shoots gorgeous 5-megapixel photos and stunning HD video. And with its advanced backside illumination sensor, it captures beautiful images even in low-light settings. The built-in LED flash does double duty. When you’re taking pictures, it works as a flash. When you’re shooting video it can stay on to light up the scene. And on the front of iPhone 4, the built-in camera is perfect for making FaceTime calls and shooting self-portraits."

Dual Mic + Speaker

"While most phones have only one microphone, iPhone 4 has two. The main mic, located on the bottom next to the dock connector, is for phone calls, voice commands, and memos. The second mic, built into the top near the headphone jack, is for FaceTime calls and for making your phone calls better. It works with the main mic to suppress unwanted and distracting background sounds, such as music and loud conversations. This dual-mic noise suppression helps make every conversation a quiet one."

Hyper Multi-Touch

"With its large Multi-Touch display and innovative software, iPhone lets you control everything using just your fingers. How does it work? A panel laminated on the glass senses your touch using electrical fields. It can register multiple touches at once to support advanced gestures such as pinch to zoom, two-finger tap, and more. The panel then transmits the information to the Retina display below it."

Bottomline:

Apple iPhone 4 has leapfrogged the competition in a big way... It will take mere mortals at least one to two years to catch up to the latest iPhone 4 features & functions. But to overtake iPhone 4, well that's another story. Importantly, Apple has created an amazing engineering feat with the latest iPhone 4 that possibly makes it the best designed iPhone to date. Steve Jobs will agree...

iPhone Units & Revenue Growth

iPhone Sales & Revenue Growth

The new iPhone 4.0 will accelerate the stalled iPhone Units & Revenue Growth beginning the current quarter (assuming iPhone 4.0 goes on sale on June 24), and jumping in the subsequent quarters. Importantly, the new iPhone 4.0 will contribute at least $2 billion in new business for Apple during the first 4 quarters of launch. That's another successful innovation from Apple. Would it fend off the onslaught of Google Android devices, and the impressive success of surging HTC, Motorola, LG, Samsung and others remains to be seen...

Bottomline:
Apple surpassed Microsoft as the most valuable technology company. Apple is on a high growth drive. Apple's forward P/E is only 16.58, whereas the current P/E is 21.78. Analysts are estimating Apple's stock to rise to $303.11, with a high end estimate of $350. If Apple stock indeed breaks $350, Apple's marketcap will expand to $318.5B, higher than Exxon Mobile's marketcap of $284B, making it the most valuable company in USA (source: Yahoo Finance). With successful new innovations such as the iPad that will generate at least $5 billion in new business this year, and the impending launch of the new iPhone which will bring in more sales, Apple will accelerate the torrid growth throughout 2010. The stars are aligning for a perfect marketcap storm that Apple is going to cause, as analysts will ponder on whether to raise Apple's stock target price further to $400 come December. It's a matter of when, not a matter of if, that Apple will surpass Exxon Mobile. Bravo Apple!!

Apple iPad ignites the Ebook readers market

"Yankee Group forecasts that the already hot United States ebook reader market is about to catch fire, sparking from $1.3 billion in revenue in 2010 to $2.5 billion by 2013.

What’s the key finding of the research and why?Yankee Group forecasts sales of eReader devices to rise from 6 million units in 2010 to a little over 19 million units sold in 2013.
Revenue from the sale of these devices will similarly catch fire, sparking from $1.3 billion in revenue in 2010 to $2.5 billion by 2013.
Additionally, by 2013 the U.S. ebook reader sales will reach 19.2 million, a CAGR of 34 percent, with 6 million ebook readers sold in 2010 alone.
The U.S. installed base of ebook readers will hit over 36 million, up from an installed base of 9 million by 2011.
Half of all consumers who indicate interest in buying an ebook reader will have bought one already, so device makers should act quickly.
"Our forecast is built around a model that factors in the effects of price elasticity, network effects and adoption risk and is loosely based on product diffusion models developed by Everett Rogers and Frank Bass." - Dmitriy Molchanov, an analyst at Yankee Group, regarding the research firm’s new study, “Yankee Group’s US EBook Reader Forecast: Kindling a Fire”

Apple (AAPL) launched the iPad on April 3, 2010... at unbelievable pricing:
"With iPad, you get all our latest innovations. And all our most advanced technologies. In one of the most revolutionary products we’ve ever created. All at a price that’s well within reach." Apple
iPad Wi-Fi 16 GB starts at $499
iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 16GB starts at $629

Pre-orders were brisk for Apple's new iPad
Neither recession nor gadget overload shall slow the mania surrounding the introduction of Apple's iPad mobile computer.
On Friday, the first day that buyers could pre-order the device (it arrives in stores next month), Apple racked up an estimated 91,000 sales in just the first six hours of availability, putting temporarily to rest the Internet's persistent "iPad fail" meme. Analysts predict the first-year sales could reach 5 million.
Engadget.com asked its tech-savvy readers whether they planned to buy an iPad, which starts at $499. The result: Nearly 19 percent of 60,000 respondents said yes; 65 percent were negative; and 16 percent clicked "What's an iPad?"

Apple Sells One Million iPads

CUPERTINO, California—May 3, 2010—Apple® today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad™ on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.
“One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”
New Survey Shows Huge Wave of Apple iPad Demand Striking Amazon
A ChangeWave survey of 3,171 consumers – conducted in the aftermath of that Apple announcement (Feb 1-10) – shows a huge wave of pre-launch demand for the iPad and offers key evidence that the Apple tablet will have a major impact on the e-Reader, laptop and home entertainment markets.
Moreover, the survey shows Amazon (AMZN) and its e-Reader competitors are poised to take a big hit early on from the iPad's entry into their market.
The survey shows the Apple iPad is now poised to capture an astonishing 40% of the e-Reader market going forward in the first 90 days after its launch.

Bottomline:
According to Yankee Group, there will be at least 6 million eBook readers sold in 2010 (this survey was done before the Apple iPad announcement & launch). However, this is assuming the eBook reader market grows according to the baseline forecasts by Yankee. In all likelihood, the eBook readers market will grow much faster, rather ignite exponentially, with the introduction of iPad.
If Apple takes 40% of the U.S. market share, Apple will sell at least 2.4 million iPads in 2010 - new business worth at least $1.2 billion in the first year of launch - WOW! Apple has already sold 1 million new iPads. Apple creates a new category of devices that combine eBook readers, multi-media players, web browsers, music players, productivity apps, e-mail, business & entertainment apps & more. Apple is poised to sell at least 4 million iPads in 2010 (Apple will begin selling iPads in 9 countries in May), thereby creating yet another successful, disruptive aka "killer innovation"! Only Apple knows best how to create new businesses that grow from 0 to $1 billion plus in less than one year... this is simply AMAZING!
What does this mean for Amazon & Kindle? Would iPad relegate Kindle to second place, and deliver a knock-out punch? If history is a guide (and considering what Apple did with iPod and then with iPhone), Amazon has got to be worried... What will be Amazon's answer to the iPad? Kindle 3 better be good!
