The iPhone 4 With a New A4 Processor

The new iPhone 4 is finally available to consumers after a long wait. Is this latest Apple handset destined to become one of the best selling phones of all time?

The design of the iPhone 4 has changed for the first time since the original iPhone was released. With a width measurement of 58.6 mm and an overall depth of 9.3mm, the new model is smaller than its predecessor, the 3GS, despite the 115.2mm height remaining the same. The famous curved back has now disappeared, replaced with many more straight lines and right angles. Thanks to the incorporation of glass into the build, the overall weight has increased by a mere 2 grammes, but this only makes the phone feel more substantial and generally have a better build quality. The iPhone 4 display really does stand out amongst its peers. Displaying a huge 326 pixels in a square inch, the 960 x 640 resolution display really does make reading text seem as if you are reading it off a printed page, with no blurring around the edges, even when you zoom in on a document. The handset features 78% of the pixels included on the famous i Pad, which has a massive 10 inch screen. Size wise the screen maintains its 3.5" measurement, and it also still uses the much praised pinch and zoom facility. Contrast ratio has been upped to 800:1, four times what is offered on the 3GS, with the result being a much wider range of colours.

In an improvement to previous models, Apple have chosen to use their new A4 chip as the processor that drives the iPhone 4. If you thought the 3GS was fast, then this will blow you away. The processor is the same found in the phones big brother, the iPad. Alongside the familiar Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor, proximity sensor and compass you will find a new type of sensor named the Gyroscope. This works on three separate axis and detects the roll, yaw and pitch of the handset. Although not immediately advantageous, long term this gives software developers scope to develop much more lifelike games and programs. The improved camera can now capture 720P High Definition footage or still shots with a resolution of 5 mega pixels, but with much better results than you would expect thanks to an improved sensor. LED flash and geo tagging accompany the still shot facility.

With the long wait for the iPhone 4 finally over, it seems that this is indeed a handset that was worth waiting for. A revamped design and stunning screen ad appeal to an already much loved format.
